Welcome to Phoenix Middle School

Phoenix exists to facilitate student opportunity to discover a deeper understanding of self and their relationship to the world in which they live. Phoenix is a community where students, parents, teachers, and community members are actively involved in teaching and learning from each other. The responsibility is shared for providing a stimulating environment in which all students are encouraged to reach their highest potential. We value self-direction, having choices, relevance of curriculum, students being responsible for their own learning and the evaluation of their own progress.

We strive to make students feel valued and a part of their school. Along with the Worthington Schools graded course of study, the program also includes:

  • Creative Start: classes in the arts, music, and drama for all students every day.
  • Flexible block scheduling, allowing for integration across disciplines / curricula
  • Foundations: building basic skills in areas such as writing, technology, research skills, public speaking
  • Connections: a critical thinking course which includes service learning and multidisciplinary projects.
  • Learning Extensions: teacher-supervised time at the end of the school day used to further develop and extend student learning, support concept mastery, complete homework, and provide time for extracurricular activities.
  • Global education
  • Mastery grading / Portfolio assessment
  • Community service connected to the curriculum
  • Student voice and student choice
  • Increased opportunity for student / teacher interaction
  • Phoenix Forum: weekly town hall meetings with the student body
  • Regularly scheduled, monthly parent forum.
